Delve into the extraordinary world of French Post-Impressionist Paul Gauguin through the captivating exhibition, "Gauguin's World: Tōna Iho, Tōna Ao." This rare showcase presents some of Gauguin's most renowned masterpieces, many of which originated in the Pacific region, offering fresh insights into his life, artistic influences, networks, and historical impact.

Curated by Henri Loyrette, former director of the Louvre Museum and Musée d’Orsay, the exhibition spans diverse mediums, including painting, drawing, engraving, sculpture, and decorative arts. Loyrette traces Gauguin's artistic evolution from his impressionist beginnings to the exploration of Polynesian visions, illustrating the artist's connection to the art and themes of his era. The exhibition invites contemporary perspectives to reexamine Gauguin's work, acknowledging the debates surrounding his life and art in today's context.

Recognizing the complexities of Gauguin's interactions in Polynesia during the late 19th Century, the National Gallery will engage in discussions, public programs, a podcast series, and films to explore Gauguin's life, art, and controversial legacy. Additionally, the exhibition season will feature a display of collection works by contemporary artists from the Pacific and beyond.

Complementing the exhibition is a fully illustrated publication, edited by curator Henri Loyrette. This publication includes Loyrette's significant new essay on Gauguin, along with contributions from Gauguin experts Hiriata Millaud, Nicholas Thomas, Vaiana Giraud, and Norma Broude.

Organized by the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, in collaboration with The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Art Exhibitions Australia, "Gauguin's World" is made possible through the steadfast support and generosity of Principal Sponsor Mazda Australia, Principal Donor Singapore Airlines, News Corp, the Government of French Polynesia and Minister for Tourism, and other esteemed individual and corporate supporters.

Gauguin’s World: Tōna Iho, Tōna Ao is a ticketed exhibition.
